Custodes Contemptor Dreadnought Work in Progress

I have always liked the idea of the Adeptus Custodes, the mysterious protectors of the Emperor. I never believed that we would get models for them, let alone to awesome range of vehicles and upgrades that Forge World are putting out. I just had to get myself some to paint and game with, even without looking at the rules!

So naturally, I was even happier when Games Workshop released the Talons of the Emperor boxed set and I could use them in 40k too.

I’m always nervous to start painting Forge World vehicles, especially in a new scheme, due to the nature of the models. I need to do them justice.

So I was quite happy that there was a plastic Contemptor in the set, included for use with the Custodes, and I decided this would be my test model.

However, the model is a bit bland. I wanted to make it look a bit more special to go with the Custodes and less like a standard Legion Contemptor.

As usual, I cut it at the waist allowing me to pose the torso. I’ve also added some spare parts from the Forge World contemptors to the elbow and knee joints.

But the main thing I have done is add the eagle parts from the Custodes vexilla. But I can’t decide whether I like them on the front or on the side.

This is where you come in! Please vote for the look that you prefer and help me decide.

After taking these pictures, I also changed over the head:

To do this I used something called instant mold. This is a plastic material that you can heat up and mold around a part. Then using green stuff – I used grey stuff, or pro create putty for mine – you can cast up duplicate parts. It’s not brilliant, but works well on small parts, or large lesser detailed pieces.

I then used a saw to cut out the head from the plastic model. Cutting at both right angle (front and top) until the cuts met in the middle.

Thanks for reading, and I will give you an update on how I get on, including painting.
