How to paint Space Wolves part 2: Geigor Fell-Hand painted as Bran Redmaw, Wolf Lord
If you’ve not yet read part one of this, posted some time ago, you can find it here.
From where I left off, I’ve done a number of things with the miniature to get it to the point you see below:
Shoulder pad: Painted around the Space Wolf logo with Citadel Averland Sunset base, then washed with Citadel Casandora Yellow shade.
Bone: Washed with Citadel Gryphonne Sepia shade, then highlighted with Rakarth Flesh.
Blade and silver metallics: Painted all Vallejo Model Air Chrome, then washed with Vallejo Black Shade.
Fur ‘tails’: Painted Vallejo Beige Brown, then washed with Vallejo Umber Shade.
Fur pelt: Painted Vallejo Flat Brown, then washed with Black Shade.
Golds: Washed with Gryphonne Sepia.
His hair was then painted Flat Brown, then the raised areas were picked out with Vallejo Orange Red.
I then mixed some Snow using Woodland Sceneics SNOW and some standard B&Q Decorator’s PVA. Any PVA will do for this and you can probably get it way cheaper than in B&Q.
I glued two grass tufts to the base, then spread the pea/snow mix around the it, coating the base. The snow itself is good in that, you can mix it so that it’s wet enough to stick, but thick enough that you can mould it. I try to mould near the feet to show a footprint where the foot is lifting from the ground. I also wipe small amounts on the grass, so it kind of ‘beads’, as this looks good to me (though not to everyone, I’m sure).
Adding some Vallejo German Orange to the hair mix, I highlighted the hair/beard twice using addition German Orange and a very light dry brush. I used a thin brush to pick out a few individual sections.
I then painted the gems in my standard way – Paint Red, in this case Citadel Mephiston Red base, then add white to it to give a few highlights on two of the gemstones opposite sides. While the red was out, I painted the inside of the pelt with it, then washed it with Citadel Druchii Violet. For a full breakdown of painting gemstones, see this post, or this video.
The Bone was then highlighted with Citadel Ushabti Bone and the gold highlighted with Vallejo Old Gold.
With the bulk of the work done, I added a few final white highlight lines and spots to the gemstones, painted his eyes (Vallejo White for the eye and Abaddon Black for pupils), mouth (Mephiston Red) and teeth (White). I also added a final Black shade to the top of the fur ‘tails’.
Touching up the scroll on his power glove, I used Rakarth Flesh, Washed with Gryphonne Sepia, highlight with Rakart Flesh again, then added some white to the Rakarth Flesh, and added a final highlight. Once this was dry, I wrote ‘FENRIS’ on the scroll using a 0.1 Artline pen.
All in all I’m pretty pleased with how he turned out. After varnishing with Matte Varnish, then ‘Adrcoat on the gems, he’ looking pretty good, and is protected from my clumsiness.
Thanks for reading.
