Well, it’s the last day of preseason. We’ve seen late transfers, changing sponsors, new managers, and brutal deaths. Maybe well get to see some sport soon? As October starts, it has become apparent that each team is slightly unfinished due to life commitments workloads, delayed miniatures arriving and what have you, and because of this, we’re extending the challenge another week to really show off what has been, and will be, achieved.
Adam – The Middenheim Towers
So, this week has been characterised by a last minute dash to the close of the transfer window. Royal Joe has been tearing his hair out awaiting the arrival of his latest Star Player from our FLGS (definitely a selling club), as well as a few last signings to round out the team. These got here on Thursday. Obviously the Old World hasn’t yet had a Moist Von Lipwig-esque postmaster to speed these things up!
The main this is: the team list is finalised!
- Three Blitzers (270,000gp)
- Two Catchers (120,000gp)
- Two Throwers (140,000gp)
- Ogre (140,000gp)
- Four Linesmen (200,000gp)
- Two Re-rolls (100,000gp)
- Fan factor 3 (30,000gp)
The team list didn’t change much through drafts, but the last 60,000gp was a hard choice.
I really would have preferred another Catcher as I really rate these players. Their speed and the dodge skill has been consistently involved in scoring touchdowns in practice play. Unfortunately, unlike their Thrower brethren they are absolute wimps (-1 to both strength and armour) and cannot really fill in for Linesmen at a pinch.
Therefore my final choice was another Linesman and a third Fan Factor point, rather than a third Catcher. Whether this was the right choice is open to debate but I feel that a strong defensive line will be more use, After a few games, who knows, I might be able to bring another Catcher on to my roster if things go well!
The third Blitzer felt necessary as I have had issues pushing forward in our test games. Dave’s Orcs just walloped my Blitzers, who spent most of the game on their backs! Whilst the Blitzer is much more expensive than a linesman (40,000gp difference), hopefully his movement and block skill will make up for the re-roll that would have been the alternative (albeit with a drop of one fan factor required, too). A third one might mean that I can actually have one upright to make the most of his movement!
Hopefully, my offensive capabilities will also be helped with the addition of Rhoon Grannygrabber, my Ogre Star player and his high strength (here he is below, looking half painted and just as gorgeous as his namesake…).
I am torn between leaving him to hold one side of the pitch with a linesman in support and then massing the other flank with blitzers, or using him to break through the opposing line centrally. Only games will be able to tell me which of these tactics works best!
I have expanded my team to 16 models, based on the players I see myself adding during our league. So I have also added the third catcher and another linesman whilst I am painting up the new additions for the starting team. I have also been working on my manger, Joe, and the accessories for the team so that everything will look as pretty as possible for the start of the season.
My original twelve players are almost complete. They really just need a few beard highlights, very important to Middenheimers, decals adding and basing. It almost sounds easy when you say it like that!
I am rather pleased with the results, as these have been painted with a pretty limited palette and simple techniques. Unfortunately I have painted these guys in quite a rush (as only an amateur level Blood Bowl manager I have to have a real job too, you see…) there are no step-by step photos… but using the painting guide in the Blood Bowl game and substituting the colours you could get something very similar indeed, should you desire.

Mike – The Woolitchscratch Weapons
I did it! Well, as far as I’m concerned they’re finished to tabletop standard. What I mean by that is that I would be happy to play games with them. There’s more I’d like to do, but maybe another day.
I painted the white making sure that I gave the layer two thinned coats to make sure the main colour was solid. It’s actually Citadel Ulthuan Grey, with only a white highlight. The red follows a similar method.
The browns were given a quick highlights of Citadel Gorthor Brown. And the metals with Runefang Steel.
The bases were coated with Citadel Astrogranite texture paint. I love this stuff, as it’s so easy to use. Then washed with Citadel Agrax Earthshade.
Rob – Peak Pass Pulchinellas
The goblins made a fair bit of progress this week. As I worked out the final team roster, I realised I’d been painting up the full sixteen, when in fact I’ll be using eleven to start with. The team is:

This leaves me with 50k spare, which will become apparent at a later point. This week I’ve 90% finished two trolls and the coach, and painted up the yellows and some of the greens on the rest of the goblins. The Fanatic is almost nearly done.

Due to exceptional circumstances, the Skull River Brawlers have been banned from the league for a week (that or Dave’s had too much on…) and will return completed and shiny next Sunday. That or we’ll string him up.
