Mortarion – Daemon Primarch of Nurgle, part 4

This week I continued from where I left off, on the base. I started by painting all the pustules and boils with a mix of Citadel Averland Sunset and Vallejo White, before adding Citadel Carroburg Crimson shade around these areas. I also added Carroburg Crimson to the areas surrounding the tears in the flesh/stone. I painted the skull with Citadel Ushabti Bone, washed with Citadel Sepia shade, then highlighted with Ushabti Bone again.

Again, I found that trying to paint a lot of the parts before attaching them resulted in the paint being rubbed off, so to prevent this, I glued on his arms, some more of the dangling bits from his cloak, and his wonderful handsome face (it looks like he’s been hit with a shovel. For ten thousand years). The second picture is to show the size of him alongside the Biologus Putrifier, as well as how he looks with more parts attached.

Once everything was attached, I started work on the Vallejo Russian Uniform WW2. I realised that I’d painted his pauldrons beige, and so repainted them with the Russian Uniform WW2 so that he was in line with the rest of his chapter/legion. I also used this to paint the loin cloths and hoods of the Nurglings, as well as Mortarion’s hood, and some sections of cloak that were added on.

I painted Citadel Rakarth Flesh on the bony spine running the length of the scythe blade, as well as the bony protrusions on Mortarion, and the horns on the Nurglings. I also took this opportunity to make sure I hadn’t missed any sections of Vallejo Model Air Steel, and Vallejo Model Air Rust as there were a lot of small sections that weren’t at first apparent.

I also used Vallejo Model Colour Basic Skintone on all the flesh tubes, and Mortarion’s face. On the Nurglings, I used Citadel Nurgling Green to colour their skin.

The final section for this week was the shades. I used the following shades on the following areas:

Citadel Nuln Oil – On all Model Air Steel sections
Citadel Seraphim Sepia – All bone, patches of the Model Air Steel, all new sections of cloak and loin cloth, any areas of metal that have the moulded corrosion on.
Citadel Agrax Earthshade – All sections painted with Model Air Rust
Citadel Druchii Violet – Mortarion’s face
Citadel Reikland Fleshshade – The Nurgling’s flesh.

The shades were the final layer for this week – although there’s not many steps here, the amount of areas and size/complexity have taken a lot longer than expected. Below are a few close ups of where we’re up to today.

That’s all for this week. Hopefully more next weekend.
