How to Paint Heresy Era Iron Hands – Part 5 (Weathering)
This week I’m going to look at the next stage of painting Horus Heresy Iron Hands. In the previous post I looked at how to add the clan decals to the Iron Hands’ shoulder pads. The next stage is weathering them.
There are a few different ways of weathering your models, but because these guys are dark in colour and quite metallic I went with a sponges effect.
What you will need is a bit of old sponge (in this case it’s a sore bit of packing case), a paint, and some kitchen towel. For the Iron Hands I used Citadel Ironbreaker, because it is a mid-tone silver.
Dip the sponge into the paint and then, as you would if you were drybrushing, wipe of as much paint as possible. It’s always best to start small and build it up.
Then it’s quite simple. Just sponge onto the model on the areas that would take the most damage or wear. I try to make sure the it do it over different colours, such as the legion badge, as this helps blend it all together.
As you can see, this almost random sponging gives a very natural effect.
Some areas there’s a bit of wear, and others it has taken a bit more.
I also find that if you over do the weathering it looks very unnatural and starts to look more like a painted model, rather than a character, or vehicle with weathering.
I hope this is useful. If you have any questions please comment below.
