How to: Paint Saga Anglo-Dane Warriors, Part 2
Welcome to part 2 of the tutorial. If you’ve missed the first part, you can find it here. This is the final part for the Anglo-Dane warriors, but the techniques shown in these two posts can generally be used for the Gripping Beast Plastics shown, regardless of which army they belong to. The only difference would probably be colours and patterns.
Tunics and trousers
For the trousers and tunics I used three colours to basecoat them – Vallejo Khaki, Citadel Russ Grey and Vallejo Pastel Green. On the rest of my warriors (shown in the Saga Sunday post here) I’ve also used Vallejo Beige Brown, Vallejo Flat Brown, and Vallejo Green Ochre.
I only use two stages in painting them, apply the basecoat and then the shade:
Russ Grey – Citadel Drakenhof Nightshade Shade
Pastel Green – Citadel Athonian Camoshade Shade
Vallejo Khaki – Citadel Seraphim Sepia Shade
Face and hair
The faces were all painted in exactly the same way – because there’s lots of them and they all have facial hair and helms, I didn’t feel the need to have a variety of skintones. It was quick and simple but had a good overall effect.
Basecoat – Vallejo Base Flesh
Shade – Citadel Seraphim Sepia
Highlight – Vallejo Base Flesh
The eyes were painted using Vallejo White, with a spot of Citadel Abbadon Black.
The hair was painted using the following basecoats and shades.
Blonde
Basecoat – Vallejo White
Shade – Citadel Cassandora Yellow
Ginger
Basecoat – Citadel Fire Dragon Bright
Shade – Citadel Feugan Orange
Brown
Basecoat – Vallejo Burnt Umber
Shade – Citadel Nuln Oil
Shield Reverse
The reverse of the shield was an incredibly simple method, using only two paints. As they are pretty much unseen during a game, I didn’t see too much point in spending a lot of time on them.
Basecoat – Vallejo Tan Brown
Shade – Citadel Agrax Earthshade
Belts, straps and Pendants
I painted these up in almost an identical way to the legwraps as the method is simple, but effective.
Pendant – Vallejo Model Air Chrome
Pendant string – Vallejo Burnt Umber
Straps and belts Basecoat – Vallejo Beige Brown or Vallejo Flat Brown
Straps and belts Shade – Citadel Agrax Earthshade
Buckles – Citadel Retributor Armour
Spears and swords
As with the chain mail from the original post, I wanted the blades to look like they weren’t as polished and shiny as replicas that you’d see today, so they would look a little darker. With that in mind, I used the same techniques.
Basecoats
Sword grip – Citadel Retributor Armour
Sword blade and spear head – Citadel Leadbelcher
Shades
Sword grip – Citadel Agrax Earthshade
Sword blade and spear head – Citadel Nuln Oil
With the final paints in place, I based them all using Citadel Texture Paint Lustrian Undergrowth, then finished them off with a variety of Army Painter static grass tufts to keep them the same as the other Anglo-Danes. With the models based, they were finally completed.
