How To: Paint Dark Angels Tactical Squad (Red Symbols/Purity Seals)
Hello and welcome to the continuation of my posts on how to paint Warhammer 40,000 Dark Angels. If you haven’t been keeping up, you can read the first post here.
Today, I’m going to demonstrate how to get the red for the tactical badges and purity seals on a Dark Angels Tactical Squad. You can use this for any red, as well as other Dark Angels models, such as terminators and raveniwing if you wish to.
The first stage was to basecoat with two thin coats of Citadel Khorne Red. It’s better to use thin coats to make sure it is an even coverage for when you add a shade to the colour:
The next stage is to give all the red a shade of Citadel Nuln Oil. Make sure that it doesn’t pool by keeping your brush wet and using it to soak up any excess:
Next apply an edge highlight to the red with Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet. Try to catch the raised areas where the light will catch these surfaces. Sometimes you can edge highlight on the bottom of something to emphasise it, but it is generally best to highlight the tops of surfaces:
Follow up this edge highlight with another, but this time using Citadel Wild Rider Red. This time, use it to paint the corners or middle of the previous highlight to give a couple of stages of light reflecting from the surface:
If you want to go further you can add a dot of white, but I don’t tend to go that high as I prefer a subtle highlight.
