How to: Paint Dark Angels Tactical Squad (Cord Tassels)
Hello and welcome to the continuation of my posts on how to paint Warhammer 40,000 Dark Angels. If you haven’t been keeping up, you can read the first post here.
In this post I will demonstrate how to paint the cord tassels that appear on some Dark Angels and Space Marine models. This method can be used for any cord on any models you wish.
The first stage is to basecoat the cords with Citadel Zandri Dust. Use thin coats until you are happy with the consistency, as this will aid the coverage of the shade in the next stage:

Next, cover this entire area with a wash of Citadel Agrax Earthshade. Make sure that the shade does not pool, by using a wet brush to wipe away any excess:

The next stage is recover the Zandri Dust layer, but this time only on the fronds of the cord. Use a small brush for this, like a small layer, or size 0. Carefully, paint lines on the cord as shown below. It is often best to thin the paint, then you can always add more if needed, rather than having to repaint earlier stages:

Next, repeat the same process, but with Citadel Baneblade Brown:

Then finally a highlight of Ushabti Bone. Each stage should cover slightly less of the cord, emphasising the different individual cords:
