How to: Paint a Dark Disciple

With the release of Games Workshop’s new Chaos Space Marines came a new Dark Apostle miniature. I loved the original, but the finecast on mine seemed to become brittle, and eventually I became sick of gluing pieces of him back on and binned him. Being plastic, the new one suffers with none of those problems, and he also has two little mates with him to buff him in-game.

I painted up one Dark Disciple for a video, and though the other would make a good post. They’re small and easy to paint with a fairly limited palette. A full list of paints can be found at the bottom of this post.

The Base coats were as follows:

Robes: Outer – German Grey, Inner – Mephiston Red
Chains, cables/tubes and face speaker: Leadbelcher
Book holder: Retributor Armour
Skin: Flat Flesh
Candles: Mephiston Red
Flames: White

Next I applied the shades:

Robes: Outer – Nuln Oil, Inner – Druchii Violet
Chains, cables/tubes and face speaker: Nuln Oil
Book holder: Agrax Earthshade
Skin: Reikland Fleshshade
Candles: Druchii Violet
Flames: Casandora Yellow

Next came reapplying the base colour, ensuring that the shade is left in the recesses.

Robes: Outer – German Grey, Inner – Mephiston Red
Chains, cables/tubes and face speaker: Leadbelcher
Book holder: Retributor Armour
Skin: Flat Flesh
Candles: Mephiston Red
Flames: About 50% of the flame (top) was washed with Fuegan Orange

Next came the first highlights. As this miniature is a six pointer, I skipped highlights on the inner robe, and have removed it from the list.

Robes: Outer –
Chains, cables/tubes and face speaker:
Book holder:
Skin:
Candles:
Flames:

Robes: Outer – German Grey/Mechanicus Standard Grey mix
Chains, cables/tubes and face speaker: Model Air Chrome edge highlights on the top edges.
Book holder: Liberator Gold
Skin: Flat Flesh/White mix
Candles: Wazdakka Red/Mephiston Red mix
Flames: Carroburg Crimson for the tip of the flame

Now I moved onto some smaller details and final highlights on the miniature. While the cables, tubes, and face speaker, and the flames, didn’t get a highlight

Robes: Outer – Mechanicus Standard Grey for extreme highlights
Book holder: Liberator Gold/Model Air Chrome mix
Skin: Carroburg Crimson around the edge of the skin/sections where the skin touches a foreign body. Also Model Air Chrome for the bolts holding the skin to the outside of the speaker
Candles: Wazdakka Red

With the miniature painted, I added a 50/50 mix of Astrogranite Debris and Astrogranite, washed with Nuln Oil, applied Mechanicus Standard Grey as the base colour, then highlighted with London Grey, followed by an extreme highlight of White. With that, the miniature was complete.
